Opportunities exist for hands-on hobbyists

In an April 4 Other Voices column, Kurt Miska decried the lack of "hands-on'' hobbies. In particular, he cited the hobby of amateur
radio. Well, I'm happy to inform Kurt and your readers that not only is amateur radio alive and well, it is still a very much hands-on
hobby. We have a very active club called ARROW here in the Ann Arbor area, and we do indeed still build our own radios and antennas. I
would encourage anyone interested in amateur radio, and in doing some hands-on building and experimenting to visit our Web site at
www.w8pgw.org and join us.

There are several other groups in the area that fill the need to build and create. One of them is GOTech (tech.groups. yahoo.com/ group/notbago/ ). GOTech is for anyone who is interested in making things, be it mechanical, electronic, or
software. And in addition to these two groups, there are several robotics clubs in the area.

To be sure, hands-on hobbies are a challenge these days, but they are far from dead. I would encourage anyone with a desire to make or
build things to get involved with one or more of the local technology
clubs.
