Find Out What's on APRS

Last week's talk on weather stations and APRS seem to have stirred some interest in the APRS system. If you would like to find out what is going on with APRS in the Ann Arbor area, and do not want to invest a lot of time or money. Here is how to do it. I run an APRS server from my house so all the local APRS traffic is available on the net. So, the easiest way to have a quick look at the local traffic is to go to the following link.

http://66.167.198.14:82/

If you would like a map display you will need to do a little more work. First download and install WinAprs. You can find it at http://www.winaprs.org/

When you get it load on your computer you can run it and by going to setting connect to the APRS network. This will soon flood your machine with several thousand APRS nodes from all over the country. To make it more manageable you can connect to my local server and just get the local nodes. Open the aprserv.txt file with notepad or some other editor and insert the following text:

66.167.198.14 14439 Ann Arbor Server

Note: to make the APRS program happy you must use a tab and not a space between the first two items in the line. The last line in the file must have at least one character on it.

Then shut down WinAprs and restart it.

If you do not want to modify the file yourself drop me an email and I will send you a copy.
