Have you wanted to get your amateur license, but just haven’t had time to study?

The “Tech in a Day” training class will teach you everything you need to get your Technician Class license in one day, and then provide the opportunity to take the test at the end of the class. This is an excellent way to get started in amateur radio.

This class will be held on Saturday, September 17th, at the Ann Arbor Hands On Museum located at 221 E Ann St in Ann Arbor. The class runs from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM. There is a $10 class fee, and a $15 exam fee.

Pre-registration is required for this class. For more information, or to register, please contact Dan Romanchik by calling 734-930-6564 or sending an email to cwgeek@kb6nu.com.

224.38 (-1.6) on air in Ypsi

After a few repairs on the exciter board, the ARROW 224.38 MHz repeater is temporarily on the air in Ypsilanti. Repairs to a cold solder joint, a slightly mis-tuned trimmer cap, a board that needed to be re-mounted inside the chassis, and a few improvements to the crystal heater, and the 220 repeater is online here in Ypsilanti as a “burn-in” test. The antenna is ONLY at 20 feet so don’t expect this to be any kind of super ‘performer’.

Once the repeater has proved to be stable, and no other issues arise, the plan is to move the 220 repeater atop the Wolverine Tower site where it will join the ARROW 2-meter and 70-centimeter repeaters. At that time a repair will also be performed to fix the intermittent audio/deviation issues on the 2-meter machine.

More pictures of the 220 package can be found at: http://www.nuge.com/~wb8tkl/arrow-repeaters/220

CQ WW VHF contest this weekend

The CQ WW VHF contest is this weekend and W8PGW will be setting up to operate on 6m and 2m out at Signal Hill (Domino’s Farm) on Saturday.

The contest starts at 2pm on Saturday and lasts until 5pm Sunday afternoon.

Those of you that have one of those fancy dancy radios that cover up through 2m all-mode will be able to make contact with us and most likely other stations that are active during the contest. The way I understand it, a lot of HF antennas that will tune up on 40m can also tune up on 6m. So don’t let that be an excuse for not at least trying to make contact with W8PGW on 6m this weekend.

For those that can’t get on the air on 6m or 2m, may I extend this invitation to come out and operate on the magic band (6m) and on 2m. We usually make contacts around the country on 6m and as far as Maine and North Carolina on 2m SSB. Who knows, you may just make that one contact that Steve or I can’t pull out of the ether that we haven’t worked yet.

2011 OHR in Review

The 2011 AABTS One Helluva Ride is now history, and I can quit begging for volunteers.

There were approximately 1824 riders, which I’m told (but can’t verify) is a record. There seemed also to be a record number of flat tires, but fewer cases of road rash than in previous years. A few riders needed to be brought back in air-conditioned cars due to the heat, and the usual last-minute collapse of those not in as good of shape as they thought. We had one semi-serious incident which was handled efficiently and professionally by our SAG team, especially the Arrow/AABTS Offical Medical Officer, Dr. Lee Green KF8MO. The rider made a visit to Chelsea Community Hospital with an apparent dislocated shoulder, but I believe he was then sent home after treatment.

Thanks to Arrowheads Bruce KD8APB, Bob KI8AB, Dan KB6NU, Michelle KD8GWX, Pat N8PJR, Jim WD8RWI, George K8GEO, Ralph AA8RK, Debbie KD8ESJ, and Lori KD8GTW. Plus on-again-off-again members Steve WB8WSF, Lee KF8MO, and Michelle N8NIV. Special thanks to Joe AC8ES and Sam KD8QES serving admirably in their first OHR. They were joined by Joe W8GHA from Chelsea, Bruce N8WWX from LARK, and Bruce KD8MFR from somewhere out East who was signed up as a SAG driver before he knew there was radio involved.

Anyway, a good time was had by all. More of you really should consider participating next year.

Not to push the OHR post too far down the page, I’ll keep this short. But for those not participating in next weekends OHR event might wish to consider some camping, swimming, hiking, campfires, sing-alongs, stringing up antennas and playing radio, and of course – attending interesting Ham Radio related seminars – might wish to consider spending a few days hanging out with your fellow Hams from all around the Section, and a few from the Division, and join us at the Summer Family Outing near West Branch.
