March Meeting Program
The March 9, 2011 meeting program features a DX expedition to Ogasawara Island taken by
Steve Culp in March / April of 2010. Ogasawara Island located 600 miles southeast of Tokyo and only reachable by a 26 hour boat trip.
Traveling with Steve were three other amateur radio operators from the southeastern Michigan area. They operated for two weeks and made several thousand radio contacts around the world. Steve will annotate his adventures with photographs of the island, WWII findings, and his ham radio operation. Furthermore, Steve will bring along some items used during the DX expedition that will be of interest to the radio club members.
Following the Ogasawara presentation will be an excellent 40 minute video of K4M Midway Island DX expedition which will show what it’s like to be on a DX expedition.
The Ogasawara and Midway presentation will take an hour.
February AMPTeam outing location and time
The ARROW Mobile Portable Team is Monday, February 28th starts at 6 pm
and ends at the conclusion of the ARROW Monday Night Net (on the 146.96
repeater).
The purpose of the AMP outing is to regularly exercise and improve our
skills at setting up our portable gear in a remote location and
operating it under all weather conditions. The AMP Team goes into the
field on the 4th Monday of each month all year long. Having no control
over the weather means that sometimes we are out in some of the hottest,
darkest, most cold, windy and wet weather. These conditions oftentimes
represent the kinds of conditions Amateur Radio Operators are called out
into during natural and man-made emergencies. So we practice year
round.
Locations for the AMP Team outings are different each month and are
chosen in an effort to get us close to the General Public. The club
banner is flown and passers-by and the curious are invited over to get
some exposure to amateur radio.
This is also a social event!! After setting up and operating on HF or
making some contacts on VHF/UHF, we gather around a grill and enjoy
dinner together. The cost of the grub is covered out of donations from
those that attend. Please feel free to bring along something to toss on
the grill, a dish to share a your favorite snack to munch.
At 8pm we all check-in to the ARROW Monday Night Net, which is usually
NCS’ed on site! This is a great time for those new to hosting a net to
see how it’s done and even run it yourself. It’s not difficult and
there is a prepared script and many experienced hosts to help you out!
So come on out and join the fun! Bring your gear, or just bring
yourself. Everyone is welcome
This month we will be meeting at the Manchester Township Fire
Department, 275 S Macomb St, mi 48158.
